Meet Your Instructors

Your AVID instructors will be your teachers for all your years of AVID. You will be in the same class for as many years as you take the course, helping you develop a bond with them.

In order to get to know your possible teachers better: feel free to read the small descriptions that they have written themselves as well as see their pictures below! If you need to

Mrs. Bullock

Hello, I'm Mrs. Bullock and I have been teaching at SCHS since the fall of 2001 when there were just freshman and sophomores gracing our halls.  I am the AVID Coordinator as well as a math teacher.  Both my son (Ben) and daughter (Lexi) are graduates of SCHS.  My daughter graduated in 2020 from Colorado Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and is working at Sharp in the Human Resource Department.  My son graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering and is working at Kiewet.  When I started at SCHS he was a babe in my arms.  Time sure flies when you are having fun.

I am one of seven children and the only one who earned her college degree as well as a first-generation college student. I was blessed to have a fourth-grade teacher who taught me to never give up on my dreams and to always work towards achieving them.  I love teaching and sharing new ideas with students and am focused on making sure students strive to be the best they can be.   I believe in having high expectations for students and encouraging them to reach their full potential.  Academic excellence can be achieved with hard work and never giving up on yourself or your dreams!

When not teaching, I enjoy reading, watching movies, spending time with my hubby, and any time available hanging out at the beach.

Mrs. Fuentes

Hello, I am Mrs. Fuentes. I have taught Spanish for over a decade and this is my 8th year teaching AVID.  I was also an AVID student in middle/high school and believe in the AVID mission. My goal is to help my AVID kiddos succeed in high school and beyond.

Mrs. Armstead

I came to San Diego to attend the University of California, San Diego. I earned a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Education and a Master's degree in Education. Now that I have graduated and fallen in love with the city, I consider San Diego my home. I've been a proud SCHS Cougar since 2009. I teach AVID and Chemistry here at Steele Canyon.

When I'm not teaching, I'm enjoying time with my family - my husband, son and daughter, and our two cats. We have a lot of fun traveling, hiking, and watching our favorite movies together. I also love to run! I've run 14 half marathons and was even crazy enough to run a full marathon!

Mrs. Capen

Mrs. Capen has been a Steele Canyon Cougar since 2004.  She is new to AVID but not to its core beliefs.  Mrs. Capen is the daughter of immigrants from Laos and was taught early on that hard work and dedication through academic achievement would help her attain her dreams.  She and her seven siblings were all accepted to four-year colleges and are first-generation college students because her parents instilled a strong work ethic as well as high expectations.  It is these ideals that led her to teaching and more specifically, to AVID.  She hopes to guide and support students that also want to commit themselves to academic excellence.

Mrs. LoPrell

Hi! I am Mrs. LoPrell and I teach AVID as well as Spanish at SCHS. I attended PLNU (Go Sea Lions!) and graduated with a Bachelors in Spanish and a Master's in Teaching. I am so excited to be teaching AVID and for the opportunity to coach students as they reach their goals! When I was in high school, there were so many responsibilities and pressures that tried to keep me from putting my own achievement first, but I was lucky to have teachers that instilled in me the importance of following my own dreams. I believe that anything is possible if you have the determination to see it through! :)
